Abstract
Background:
@ES Acute leukemia is the most common childhood malignancy. Recently increasing survival rate due to the effective chemotherapy and central nervous system(CNS) prophylactic treatment has focused more interest on the neurologic complications and
their
managements. This study was performed to analyze the clinical characteristics and outcome of neurologic complications in the children with acute leukemia.
@EN Method:
@ES The medical records of the 35 acute leukemic patients with neurologic complications were reviewed. The clinical characteristics, treatment modalities and outcomes according to the neurologic complications were assessed.
@EN Result:
@ES A total of 42 neurologic complications were found in 35 patients. Seven patients(20%) experienced two episodes of unrelated neurologic complications. The neurologic complications were listed as follows; neurologic complications directly
related
to
the chemotherapy in 12 cases(29%), CNS infections in 12 cases(29%), cerebrovascular complications in 12 cases(29%). idiopathic seizures in 4 cases(10%) and emotional problems in 2 cases(5%). The cerebrovascular complications occured much more
frequently
in male patients(p=0.09). The patients with the cerebrovascular complications had worse outcome than those with other problems(p 0.05).
@EN Conclusion:
@ES Neurologic complications related to chemotherapy, CNS infeetions and cerebrovascular complications are frequent neurologic complications in children with accute leutemia.
